How Game Boy Graphics Work

Modern Vintage Gamer has just released a new video detailing both how the graphics in the original GameBoy worked and the differences between GB and GBC hardware.  It was an interesting overview in how the console was able to achieve some of the very cool graphics tricks that seemed impossible at the console’s launch.

I have pretty clear memories of getting an original Game Boy, Tetris and Super Mario World as a kid.  While I loved the ability to play a Mario game on a handheld, I was even more impressed when I saw the graphics of Super Mario Land 2!  I always wondered how the graphics could be so wildly different on the same console and videos like this help provide an understanding of how game developers used every bit of the hardware available to exploit different tricks and methods of getting more detail from the image.
