“MAIDEN” New Virtual Boy On-Rails Shooter in Development

Trailboss is currently developing a new on-rails shooter for the Virtual Boy and Steam called MAIDEN.

In the spirit of E3 I wanted to make sure Nintendo’s favorite console got at least a little bit of love, so I figured now was as good a time as any to officially announce a project that you might have seen me teasing on discord.

MAIDEN is a rail shooter in which colossal humanoid robots known as Maidens fuel a global struggle over resources. You control a team of pilots fighting their neighboring country over an energy mine. Your team is underfunded, understaffed, and ill-prepared for the battle ahead, but you’re willing to fight until your dying breath. You’ll venture across cities, deserts, forests, and mountains both in air and on land. The world of MAIDEN comes alive thanks to a mixture of hand-drawn pixel art and prerendered 3D models. MAIDEN aims to be the ultimate Virtual Boy technical showcase.

Next month I’ll be looking to Kickstarter to help raise some funds needed to complete tools to help make MAIDEN. One of my goals will be to help with Virtual Boy development documentation as I now have a lot of insight going from knowing nothing just a few months ago to having a pretty solid understanding of the system.A demo, gameplay videos, and more are on the way and are being prepped for next month. With your support I hope to put the VB Homebrew scene back on everyone’s map! Check out the attached screenshots and I’ll continue to post more updates on this thread!

A Short FAQ

Will it be on cartridge?
I don’t know a lot about making carts for VB games, but it’s something I’d like to do for the big fans. If you know a lot about this or are willing to fund the making of carts let me know!

How big is MAIDEN
I’m aiming for 4-5 hours for the main story, with 10+ hours of challenges and bonus content. If you’re asking about big in terms of storage space, I’ll do my best to keep it under 2MB so it can be played on a Flashboy.

Does MAIDEN require SRAM

What framerate is MAIDEN targeting
50fps as of right now. I’d really like to keep it that way.
