RetroN Sq Game Boy Review MJR

Note from the Writer: I want to apologize for getting this out a week late. This should have been released for the previous Weekly Roundup.

Recently the Hidden Gems Guru & YouTuber Metal Jesus Rocks received a preview unit of the new RetroN Sq. A general purpose all in one Game Boy device which is marketed as a modern plug & play solution for use with real Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridge games. All intended to be playable on modern TV’s. Retail price is $74.99 and comes in two colors variants.

While I never wish to spoil videos and the hard work of making content. I would like to highlight a couple key points that were addressed in the video, as which I would kindly ask you to please watch. The RetroN Sq has some glaring issues that should be pointed out. Chief among them being the aspect ratios and Game Boy Advance emulation software. The Sq is currently (as of the writing of this post) using 4:3 and 16:9 aspect options outputting to 720p.

Neither of which are true to the native aspect rations of 10:9 (Game Boy) and 3:2 (Game Boy Advance). Furthermore the Game Boy Advance software emulation (again as of the writing of this post) is not fully and/or poorly implemented. Hyperkin did make a statement via Twitter in response to both Metal Jesus’ review and Modern Vintage Gamers inquires regarding these issues and the response will be posted below.
