240p Test Suite Updates: Wii, GC & N64

Artemio has just posted some public Patreon updates to the 240p Test Suite.  First, the Wii and GC versions of the suite have added a Disappearing Logo test that is crucial for lag testing, as well as Phase & Video Sample Rate tests for dialing in optimal timings.  There’s also updates to the Lag Test, Monoscope pattern and MDFourier.  Artemio also let us know that he’s about 80% complete with a Nintendo 64 test suite, which is amazing news!  There’s no download available for that yet, but we’ll post as soon as there is!

The 240p Suite has been by far the most helpful piece of software I use and I rely on it almost daily.  Thanks to Artemio and other contributors, I’ve been able to use the suite for many uses beyond it’s intent.  As an example, I’ve recently been using a Wii set to 480i and the Lag Test to verify proper field deinterlacing and order.  In fact, that’s what the color toggle is for – If you set the counter to change colors, the 4:2:0 processing of something like a DVD recorder will blend the fields together, making it near impossible to test proper field separation.  Having a toggle that sets it to black and white allowed me to use different equipment to test recording and field order…and the test itself has been crucial to my “VHS capture” testing.  In fact, this test helped me prove that many cheap, handheld “VHS to Digital” recorders actually delete one field, essentially causing you to lose half the framerate of your home videos!

While this part of the post might make it seem like I’m making this “about me”, my intent is the opposite:  I’m just listing even more amazing uses for this incredible software.  The posts above are public, but please consider supporting either via a donation on itch.io, or on Patreon:  https://www.patreon.com/aurbina
