Victor Luchitz Unveils Doom CD32x Fusion: A New Era for the Doom 32X Resurrection Project

Victor Luchitz has announced the release of Doom CD32x Fusion, a significant continuation of the Doom 32X Resurrection project. This game marks the first non-FMV-based title for the CD32x, fully utilizing all five processors of the Tower of Power. Doom CD32x Fusion incorporates Doom 2, featuring 100 maps, 96 FM tracks, and adds the ability for players to create their own WADS.

The game boasts numerous graphical enhancements, including an additional 200 textures compared to its predecessor, high-resolution weapon sprites, and mid-texture support for elements like windows and fences. Audio streaming is now possible directly from the CD using SPCM technology.

Challenges in Development: Why Not a QUE/BIN/ISO Release?

During the development of version 3.0 of Doom 32X Resurrection, Victor encountered significant challenges, primarily related to ROM space. The introduction of Sega’s extended mapper aimed to increase cartridge capacity but led to compatibility issues with various flash carts. To address these problems, Victor sought a solution with Fusion.

Running the game solely from the CD was not feasible due to the 32X’s limited RAM, which could not accommodate all necessary resources. Additionally, continuous requests to a 1x speed audio CD-ROM drive would be ineffective. Consequently, a hybrid approach was adopted: critical resources—game code, textures, and enemies—are stored on the cartridge, while map data, infrequently used textures, music, and sound effects reside on the CD. This strategy leverages the system’s strengths.

Compatibility Issues

It is important to note that Doom CD32x Fusion requires a Sega CD for gameplay. Current flash carts lack the necessary connections to the Sega Genesis expansion bus, and those that do support this connection do not facilitate the Sega CD mode required to run the game. Additionally, the MiSTer project currently lacks a core for the CD32x, further limiting accessibility.

Doom CD32x Fusion is set to redefine the gameplay experience for enthusiasts, but potential players should be aware of these compatibility considerations.
