Here’s a bit of news I’m sure you’ve heard a million times just about everywhere on the internet this week: The NES Classic outsold both the PS4 and Xbox One in June. While I’m excited that these classic games are getting the recognition they deserve, I would like to bring people down to earth for a moment here –
A NES Classic is $60, comes with 30 games and is often sold out, creating a sense of urgency every time it’s available. Comparatively speaking, both the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro sell for 7-8 times as much money with only one or two games. Heck, even the Switch is 5-6 times more expensive with a game, so it’s not hard to see why people might be more inclined for an “impulse buy” when the $60 toy becomes available.

All that being said, there’s still bragging rights to be had. According to reports online: “This is the first time a Nintendo Entertainment System console has led in monthly unit sales since NPD tracking began in 1995”.
Overall, I just hope this will result in more quality products for retro gaming and less of the crap we’ve been seeing from larger manufacturers.
