Modretro Chromatic: MJR Review

Metal Jesus Rocks recently posted a review of the new Game Boy Color from Modretro, called the Chromatic. It was a great overview that included some good shots of the high-quality screen and Everdrive compatibility is confirmed.  Overall, it seems like an excellent reproduction of the original with a much better display.  That said, most people would probably prefer to spend the same $200ish on the Analog Pocket to access a lot more handhelds, however big fans of the original GBC with extra money to spend will love this.  More thoughts after the link:

While MJ’s video covered all the main features of the Chromatic, I still have a few questions.  First, will the screen be sold separately, for people who want to use it in original GBC’s?  There’s a huge modding community out there that would love that screen for existing projects, even if they had to design their own board to interface it to existing GBC’s.

I’d also like to see the “video-out” functionality demoed, as it appears to turn the Chromatic into a “USB Webcam”, not an HDMI device.  That means you can’t just connect it to a TV, but would have to use OBS to add it as a device for streaming.  I’m not really sure how I feel about that, however one thing to note, is you can connect a second Chromatic to the same computer, by going into the menu and changing the Player # to 2 on the second handheld.  This appears to change the hardware ID to a unique setting, so it won’t interfere with the 1st Chromatic USB device – Pretty cool if you’d like to stream any head-to-head matches.

One last interesting thing to note, is the Chromatic’s screen seems to have better white balance than the Analogue Pocket.  This was pointed out in the video and then the Pocket’s white balance issue was also confirmed by Kuro.  Hopefully Analogue can fix (or tweak) the Pocket’s white balance with a firmware update.
