Retro Remake PSX Themed Console & NFC Readers

The pricing for RetroRemakes MiSTer FPGA console, that is themed after a Playstation, is set to be at $225. The same price as a DE10 Nano alone.  RetroRemake is also creating an NFC reader along with NFC cards made from PCB’s. The reader is ready for SMT and basic case design.

A later post officially anounce the device to the world with a discounted pricing for founders and friends. Here’s what’s confirmed:

  • MiSTer FPGA compatibl3
  • PS1 Memory cards
  • PS1 controllers
  • Analog/Digital output
  • NFC/WiFi/BT.
  • Disc support. (Not shown in post)

It’s unkown how the disc support will be handled.

MiSTer Handheld

What’s Ken Making posted a followup video to his MiSTer Portable overview. This followup video is a step-by-step guide on how to build the portable.

Atari Jaguar (Single RAM)

There is a new Jaguar core in development by Mazamars, and it works with only 1 SDRAM chip. The developer did a live stream with Pixel Cherry Ninja where you can see the status of the core.

Konami Twin 16 Core

Jotego ended 2024 by releasing a brand new core. This core is based on Konami’s Twin 16 hardware. Called JTTWIN16 there are two new games playable.

  • Cue Brick, a puzzle game.
  • Gradius 2/Vulcan Venture

Tehkan World Cup core now public

Jotego’s JTWC core, which is compatible with Tehkan World Cup, is now public as no more issues have been reported. Non-Patreon subscribers can now download the core. As far as I know, the games supported on this core are:

  • Tehkan World Cup
  • Grid Iron Fight

YM3438 Core

Core developer Raki just started development of a Yamaha YM3438 core. This isn’t an entire arcade core, since this is an FM sound chip. So this would be a module that could be plugged in to other cores that need this sound chip implementation.

Raki is hoping that this new core will fix the sound bug in the current Psychic 5 core.

Ninja Gaiden

Jotego also released an arcade core for Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden. It’s currently in beta so it’s only available to Patreon subscribers.

Sega ST-V

Electron Ash has a WIP core for the Sega ST-V arcade system. The core is based on the current Saturn core. There is a github with some core builds, but those builds are pretty old and I’m not sure if they have the ST-V support. However, the GitHub does have some recent commits so you can always try to compile the current code yourself.

Zaparoo Core Update

A new Zapparoo Core and Zaparoo app has been released. These new releases finalize the transition from TapTo to Zaparoo but also include many new features and bug fixes. There are some major changes to how Zaparoo is now configured and you can get the details from the official website.

Notable new features for Zaparoo are:

  • Initial support for media playlists
  • Initial support for video playback on MiSTer

If you would like to read the full list of features and bug fixes for both Zaparoo core and the Zaparoo app, check out the post on the official Zaparoo.org website.

Bedroom Ninja Top Loading Zaparoo Readers

BedroomNinja designed some Zaparoo readers that can house SNES, Game Boy, standard NFC cards and Zaparoo Trading cards. It’s called the Zaploader NT. This will not load games directly from a cartridge, but if you attached an NFC sticker to a cart, you will be able to launch a Game by inserting a cart to one of the ports on the Zaploader NT.

You can follow Bedroom Ninja on social media to find out when the Zaploader NT goes on sale.

Twinbee/Gradius/Galactic Warriors

Raki has promoted cores for the arcade games Twinbee, Gradius and Galactic Warriors to public status. The cores can be downloaded through the update_all script.
