I just stumbled across the WideNES project, which uses an algorithm and emulation to “widen” the viewable area of NES games. At the moment, it looks a bit complicated to get running, yet is still an exciting development. Projects like this are proof that emulation can offer an amazing new perspective, never possible with real hardware:
